Thought for the Day: Space & Time
I wrote a blog post some time ago, on an old (and now defunct) personal blog, about space and time. Rather than being concerned with metaphysics, the space and time in question were actually the space on your hard drive(s) to store photo’s and the time needed for some shots that’s needed for you to go away and learn how to process them to your satisfaction.
I don’t have the time or the inclination right now to re-hash the article, though I’ll maybe have a crack at it tomorrow. However, the following shot was taken by me right the way back in 2005, on my very first digital SLR, in the village where I used to live (indeed, the village where I was born!). It’s taken me nearly 4 years to learn sufficient Photoshop skills that I’m now able to process it to a stage where I’m reasonably satisfied.

I’m very definitely a hoarder, but it’s worth bearing in mind that some things are worth keeping hold of.

Absolutely, it is also interesting to revisit shots that you have already processed, I did that late last year on one that I knew had more in it than I had got at the time…
Thats a gorgeous photograph, I passed through Crich on Monday actually, what a lovely place, I’ve probably mentioned before but most of my family are from around there (Grindleford) I’m not sure I would want to go and revisit my photographs from 4 years ago, I think they might scare the hell out of me.
I reprocessed a shot of a wheat field full of poppies a few months back – I’d taken it probably 2 years before and it had my then-trade-mark overprocessed sky and huge colours.
the new one was far more natural and realistic – I shoved it on a website I use where you can vote on photos, and guess what, it got about 1/2 the votes of the over-processed one!
I think as you mature as a photographer, you do gain some form of subtlety – a more restrained approach to processing maybe?
Oh good, now I know that several years down the line I’ll be grateful I can’t seem to find the delete button then. At the current rate of progress, my skills should be up to it in about 2020…
